Man jailed five years for selling child for N10m

A Niger State magistrate court sitting in Minna, the state capital, has sentenced one Isah Aliyu to five years imprisonment for intending to sell his 9-year-old child for N10m.
The 30-year-old man attributed his action to poverty.
The incident occurred on November 15 when the buyer, one Mallam Magaji, agreed to buy the child for N7 million.
But the buyer promised to pay half of the money and balance at a later date. The father of the child was said to have refused because of his desperation to collect the N7 million at once.
After the negotiation, the father agreed to the half payment but, instead of bringing the money, the buyer headed for the police station to report the deal.

The police then followed Magaji to the meeting place and arrested Aliyu who was still waiting for the money so that he could hand over his son. Aliyu was charged to court under the clause prohibiting selling of child in the Niger State Child’s Right Act.
Aliyu pleaded guilty and was summarily sentenced to five years imprisonment by Chief Magistrate Hassan Mohammed.
When asked why he intended to sell his son, the convict said, “The poverty in the country is biting and things are difficult for me and my family. I felt since the boy was under my custody and he is my son, I could sell him and use the money to cater for the rest of the family.”
The Chief Magistrate described his reason as inhuman, adding that poverty was not a strong reason for the father to sell his son.
He sentenced Aliyu to five years imprisonment without option of fine.

Computer village relocates to Katangowa Internet City next year, says LASG

The Lagos State Government has disclosed that arrangements have been concluded to relocate all computer dealers in Ikeja to Katangowa Internet City, in Oke Odo area of the state, in the first quarter of 2014.
However, it has dispelled rumours making rounds over non-functioning of over 100,000 Close Circuit TV Cameras installed across the state by the Federal Government, saying the cameras have since been activated for effective surveillance and crime monitoring.
The government also disclosed that no fewer than 100,000 residents had been captured by the Lagos Residents Registration Agency, LASRAA from the beginning of this month.
Commissioner for Science and Technology, Mr Adebiyi Mabadeje, made the remarks at a recent media parley on the activities of his ministry.

According to him, all major players in the Information Technology, IT, industry would soon be moved to the 15 hectares of land axis, assuring that it would generate jobs for hundreds of Lagos residents when it finally kicked off.

Sony's PlayStation 4 goes on sale

PlayStation 4 went on sale in the United States and Canada early Friday, the first new gaming system in seven years from Sony, which desperately needs a hit.

The new system, which sells for $399, won't be on shelves by itself for long. Microsoft's (MSFT, Fortune 500) rival Xbox One goes on sale in one week, although it will cost $100 more. Both companies are counting on strong sales through the holiday shopping season.

Shoppers lined up outside many stores across the country for a special midnight debut of the system, hoping to grab up one of the limited supply. Analysts expect the demand for the system to outstrip supply through Christmas. Sony's forecast is that it will sell 5 million of the PlayStation 4's by the end of March.

And the 80 million customers who bought a PlayStation 3 will not be able to play the games they own on the new console.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A marine science instructor snorkeling off the Southern California coast spotted something out of a fantasy novel: the silvery carcass of an 18-foot-long, serpent-like oarfish.
Jasmine Santana of the Catalina Island Marine Institute needed more than 15 helpers to drag the giant sea creature with eyes the size of half dollars to shore Sunday.
Staffers at the institute are calling it the discovery of a lifetime.
"We've never seen a fish this big," said Mark Waddington, senior captain of the Tole Mour, CIMI's sail training ship. "The last oarfish we saw was three feet long."
Because oarfish dive more than 3,000 feet deep, sightings of the creatures are rare and they are largely unstudied, according to CIMI.
