Computer village relocates to Katangowa Internet City next year, says LASG

By  Ola AKONI
The Lagos State Government has disclosed that arrangements have been concluded to relocate all computer dealers in Ikeja to Katangowa Internet City, in Oke Odo area of the state, in the first quarter of 2014.
However, it has dispelled rumours making rounds over non-functioning of over 100,000 Close Circuit TV Cameras installed across the state by the Federal Government, saying the cameras have since been activated for effective surveillance and crime monitoring.
The government also disclosed that no fewer than 100,000 residents had been captured by the Lagos Residents Registration Agency, LASRAA from the beginning of this month.
Commissioner for Science and Technology, Mr Adebiyi Mabadeje, made the remarks at a recent media parley on the activities of his ministry.

According to him, all major players in the Information Technology, IT, industry would soon be moved to the 15 hectares of land axis, assuring that it would generate jobs for hundreds of Lagos residents when it finally kicked off.
“I cant categorically say when we are moving them to the city, but we are working towards the first quarter of next year. We are discussing with all stakeholders in the market to ensure the success of the project. All the traders at the market now, will be fully carried along in the project.”
“The new market will be a modern standard market that will serve as one stop shop for IT industry. This will further enhance business in a friendly and enabling environment that will add value and ensure accessibility.”
Allaying the fears of residents, Mabadeje, confirmed that the CCTV cameras in Lagos are fully operational contrary to the speculations, describing the installation of the cameras as part of the integrated communication project of the state.

Sony's PlayStation 4 goes on sale

playstation 4 lines

PlayStation 4 went on sale in the United States and Canada early Friday, the first new gaming system in seven years from Sony, which desperately needs a hit.

The new system, which sells for $399, won't be on shelves by itself for long. Microsoft's (MSFT, Fortune 500) rival Xbox One goes on sale in one week, although it will cost $100 more. Both companies are counting on strong sales through the holiday shopping season.
Shoppers lined up outside many stores across the country for a special midnight debut of the system, hoping to grab up one of the limited supply. Analysts expect the demand for the system to outstrip supply through Christmas. Sony's forecast is that it will sell 5 million of the PlayStation 4's by the end of March.

The gaming console comes with greater connectivity to social media networks, apps to link to online streaming video services and a catalog of 20 games, which is set to expand up to 30 games by the end of the year. But the Xbox One will come with more initial games and apps to some popular streaming services missing from PlayStation 4, including HBO Go and Watch ESPN.
And the 80 million customers who bought a PlayStation 3 will not be able to play the games they own on the new console.

Why carry a mobile device if you can wear one instead?

SAN FRANCISCO — News out of two events this week — one in California, the other in Europe — will provide strong clues as to whether this year's holiday shopping season is the first when smartwatches garner more attention than smartphones or computer tablets.
In Berlin, at the consumer electronics show known as IFA, Samsung and Sony are expected to show off early attempts at a combination computer/timepiece/mobile phone worn on the wrist, a product category that many are now calling a smartwatch.
Sony is already marketing its SmartWatch product, which can be purchased on eBay or Amazon.com for prices ranging from $104 to $130, respectively, although the product won't be available until Sept. 18, at the earliest.
Samsung, meanwhile, has already confirmed development of its own wearable device, as Lee Young Hee, the executive vice president of the company's mobile business, told Bloomberg News in March.

LG's G Pad and Acer's Liquid S2 phone revealed before Ifa

LG G Pad

LG and Acer are both claiming "world firsts" with their latest product launches, revealed ahead of Berlin's Ifa tech show.
LG is returning to the tablet market with the G Pad, which the company is marketing as the only 8in (20cm)-class device to feature a "full-HD display".
Acer has announced the Liquid S2 , the first smartphone capable of recording video in the 4K "ultra-HD" format.
It allows the companies to get the jump on rivals in what will be a busy week.
Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, Lenovo, Toshiba, Philips and Dyson are among other companies to have scheduled press conferences between 4 and 11 September at the consumer electronics event in the German capital.
1080p screen The 8.3in G Pad marks LG's return to the sector following its announcement in June 2012 that it was putting "tablet development on the back burner" in order to focus on smartphones.
The company has since improved its standing to become the world's third best-selling smartphone-maker after Samsung and Apple, according to tech analysis firm Gartner.
Its latest figures suggest LG sold 11.5 million handsets in the April-to-July quarter giving it a 5.1% market share.

BBM spin-off considered by BlackBerry

BlackBerry logo
BlackBerry is considering spinning off its popular messaging service BBM to form a new company, reports claim.
The troubled Ontario-based smartphone maker is considering options for its future, including a break-up or sale, but has already confirmed that the popular BlackBerry Messenger service will launch on rival platforms such as Apple’s iOS and Google Android later this summer.
Spinning it off completely, as the WSJ suggests, would allow the new business to operate with greater independence, but it would also pitch it against much larger services such as Skype, owned by Microsoft, standalone messaging apps such as WhatsApp and increasingly popular in-house options owned by other manufacturers, including Samsung’s ChatOn.
BBM is widely perceived as BlackBerry’s most valuable asset aside from its corporate email, BlackBerry Enterprise Server. The company is thought to be keen to position some of its services as particularly valuable in advance of any restructuring. Although BBM retains a loyal core of users, its 60m users are already dwarved by the 200m people who use the WhatsApp service, which currently works across platforms, and has replaced text messages for many of its young users.
