Man jailed five years for selling child for N10m

By Wole Mosadomi
A Niger State magistrate court sitting in Minna, the state capital, has sentenced one Isah Aliyu to five years imprisonment for intending to sell his 9-year-old child for N10m.
The 30-year-old man attributed his action to poverty.
The incident occurred on November 15 when the buyer, one Mallam Magaji, agreed to buy the child for N7 million.
But the buyer promised to pay half of the money and balance at a later date. The father of the child was said to have refused because of his desperation to collect the N7 million at once.
After the negotiation, the father agreed to the half payment but, instead of bringing the money, the buyer headed for the police station to report the deal.

The police then followed Magaji to the meeting place and arrested Aliyu who was still waiting for the money so that he could hand over his son. Aliyu was charged to court under the clause prohibiting selling of child in the Niger State Child’s Right Act.
Aliyu pleaded guilty and was summarily sentenced to five years imprisonment by Chief Magistrate Hassan Mohammed.
When asked why he intended to sell his son, the convict said, “The poverty in the country is biting and things are difficult for me and my family. I felt since the boy was under my custody and he is my son, I could sell him and use the money to cater for the rest of the family.”
The Chief Magistrate described his reason as inhuman, adding that poverty was not a strong reason for the father to sell his son.
He sentenced Aliyu to five years imprisonment without option of fine.

Missouri man exposed 300-plus to HIV, police say

Watch this video
(CNN) -- Prosecutors in rural Missouri have charged a man with exposing his partner to HIV and say he may have exposed more than 300 other people to the virus that causes AIDS.
David Mangum told police he had at least that many unprotected sexual encounters with people he met online or in parks since he was diagnosed with HIV in 2003, Dexter, Missouri, detective Sgt. Corey Mills told CNN. Mills said it will be difficult to find and warn those people, since Mangum "usually only knew his partners' first names."
Mangum was arrested after his former partner told police that Mangum had lied to him about his status, a police affidavit states. He was arraigned Thursday morning in Stoddard County, about 160 miles south of St. Louis, with bail set at $250,000. The former partner has tested positive for HIV, according to police.
Mangum, 36, told police that between 50 and 60 of his partners lived in Stoddard County, according to court records.
Knowingly exposing someone to HIV without their consent is a felony under Missouri law that can bring prison terms up to 15 years. Infecting someone can bring a life term.

Wayne Rooney Provides Proof Of His Fearsome Forehead Gash

(Gory Photo – Not For The Faint-Hearted!)
Wayne Rooney has just posted photographic proof of the hideous cut he suffered in training last week on his personal Facebook page in response to the growing number of doubters who seemed to think the Manchester United man was using it as an excuse to drop out of England’s game on Friday.

WARNING: It’s probably too late if you’ve already come this far, but this thing ain’t pretty…and the cut isn’t particularly pleasant viewing either…

Rooney added the following comment above the photos:

“Some people seem to be questioning my commitment to the England squad and the fact I had to pull out of the 2 games.

“There’s nothing I would like more than to be helping the lads in the qualifiers. I’m sure people will see from these images the reason why I won’t be able to play.”

Couple Adopts Baby whom Others called a Curse

Just this week, Adam had surgery to give him a palate. This brings about the hope of being able to eat and speak.
Adam and his familyFor nine months, Adam was carried in his biological mother's womb. He was safe with her, until the day he was born. Shortly after his birth, in a hospital in India, Adam was abandoned. He had been born with severe physical deformities.
No one in his family wanted him. Not one of them opened their heart or home to him. He was a child whose life many in this United States of abundance would deem unworthy of living.
When doctors told Adam's family that they could not just abandon their child, their response was quite frank. His family said they would kill him. His village said they would poison him. So Adam stayed in the hospital and waited for his true family. He didn't have to wait long.
Within the same hospital as Adam was a young couple, married for just six months—Raja Paulraj, a psychiatrist at the hospital and Jessica Cooksey Paulraj, a nurse and nursing teacher. They heard about this abandoned baby, and they went to him.
The Paulrajs loved Adam upon first sight. Doctors told them that he wouldn't live long, maybe only a few weeks. But the young couple adopted him anyway.

(CNN) -- Dawn Jackson Blatner, a registered dietitian and nutritionist for the Chicago Cubs, is trying to change the meaning of the phrase, "Treat yo'self."
Most people treat themselves by indulging in a gallon of ice cream or by lounging around the house, watching TV. Blatner wants "treat yourself" to mean exactly the opposite. Her definition is designed to give you more energy, help you lose weight and keep your body healthy.
"It's preplanning your grocery list. It's being in the grocery store and buying foods that nourish your body. It's eating mindfully," she told the audience at the Obesity Action Coalition's annual Your Weight Matters convention. "Those are really good things that when you do them, it's treating yourself right."
In other words, you deserve to feel good and look good, Blatner says. So putting in five or 10 minutes to plan your meals for the upcoming week or spending 30 minutes at the gym is the ultimate act of self-love.
"There's no bigger gesture in this world that says, 'You know what, Dawn? You matter.'"
Follow these 10 tips to "treat yourself" to a healthier, slimmer body:
1. Table. Plate. Chair.
Holly Hughes: My weight loss success
Every time you put food in your mouth, you should have three things, Blatner says: a table, a plate and a chair.
These three items ensure you're not sneaking snacks from the refrigerator late at night or gulping down 1,000

30-day rape sentence may be illegal, says Montana judge at center of controversy

New hearing in Montana rape case

(CNN) -- A 30-day rape sentence given to a teacher who admitted to raping his 14-year-old student may be illegal, according to the Montana judge who imposed it.
The judge scheduled a new hearing for Friday.
"The Defendant shall be present at argument as the Court, if necessary and appropriate, will amend the mandatory minimum portion of the sentence," read a court order filed Tuesday.
It appears the mandatory minimum is two years, not 30 days, the order said.
"In this Court's opinion, imposing a sentence which suspends more than the mandatory minimum would be an illegal sentence," it continued.
The case drew widespread attention when District Judge G. Todd Baugh imposed the 30-day sentence on Stacey Dean Rambold and made controversial comments about the victim, saying she "seemed older than her chronological age."

Why carry a mobile device if you can wear one instead?

SAN FRANCISCO — News out of two events this week — one in California, the other in Europe — will provide strong clues as to whether this year's holiday shopping season is the first when smartwatches garner more attention than smartphones or computer tablets.
In Berlin, at the consumer electronics show known as IFA, Samsung and Sony are expected to show off early attempts at a combination computer/timepiece/mobile phone worn on the wrist, a product category that many are now calling a smartwatch.
Sony is already marketing its SmartWatch product, which can be purchased on eBay or Amazon.com for prices ranging from $104 to $130, respectively, although the product won't be available until Sept. 18, at the earliest.
Samsung, meanwhile, has already confirmed development of its own wearable device, as Lee Young Hee, the executive vice president of the company's mobile business, told Bloomberg News in March.

A Texas father who discovered a man raping his five-year-old daughter and beat him to death with his bare hands will not be charged with homicide under state law.

District Attorney Heather McMinn and Lavaca County Sheriff Mica Harmon appear at a news conference in Halletsville, Texas on Tuesday, June 19, 2012 in the aftermath of the killing
A Texas father who discovered a man raping his five-year-old daughter and beat him to death with his bare hands will not be charged with homicide under state law.

A Lavaca County grand jury decided not to press charges against the 23-year-old father in the June 9th death of Jesus Mora Flores, 47, who was killed inside a remote shack after he was caught molesting the young girl.

Under Texas state law, deadly force is authorized and indeed, justified in order to stop an aggravated sexual assault and coupled with the fact that the harrowing 911 calls made by the father back claims he even tried to save the pedophile's life led to the grand jury's decision.

Lavaca County sheriff's deputies said that the father, whose name has not been released to protect the little girl's identity, sent her and her brother to feed the family's chickens.

The boy rushed back to tell his dad that someone had grabbed his sister and taken her to a small secluded shack and the father rushed towards his daughter's screams and arrived to find them both with their underwear off.

Flying into a rage, the father beat Flores unconscious, but attempted to call 911 for the rapist after he had made sure his daughter was safe.

Sheriff Micah Harmon had said in June that he was not willing to press charges against the father, rather the case would be presented to a grand jury. At the time, Harmon said that the man was 'very remorseful' and didn't know at the time he had killed Flores.

'You have a right to defend your daughter,' Harmon told CNN at the time. 'The girl's father acted in defense of his third person. Once the investigation is completed we will submit it to the district attorney who then submits it to the grand jury, who will decide if they will indict him.'

Indeed, the father is heard profanely screaming at a dispatcher who couldn't locate the property.
Becoming increasingly frazzled, the father at one point tells the dispatcher he's going to put the man in his truck and drive him to a hospital before sheriff's deputies finally arrive.

V'Anne Huser, the father's attorney, sternly told reporters several times during a news conference at the Lavaca County courthouse that neither the father nor the family will ever give interviews.
'He's a peaceable soul,' Huser said. 'He had no intention to kill anybody that day.'

The attack happened on the family's ranch off a quiet, two-lane county road between the farming towns of Shiner and Yoakum.

Authorities say a witness saw Flores 'forcibly carrying' the girl into a secluded area and then scrambled to find the father. Running toward his daughter's screams, investigators said, the father pulled Flores off his child and 'inflicted several blows to the man's head and neck area.'

Emergency crews found Flores' pants and underwear pulled down on his lifeless body by the time they responded to the 911 call.

The girl was taken to a hospital and examined, and authorities say forensic evidence and witness accounts corroborated the father's story that his daughter was being sexually molested.

'Under the law in the state of Texas deadly force is authorized and justified in order to stop an aggravated sexual assault or sexual assault,' District Attorney Heather McMinn told reporters in June.

All the evidence provided by the sheriff's department and the Texas Rangers indicated that's what was occurring when the victim's father arrived at the scene,' she said.
Authorities said he expressed regret at the killing at the time, and no evidence so far has led them to doubt his story. The girl's grandfather agreed it had been an accident.
'My son. Sorry,' the grandfather told the Victoria Advocate in broken English. 'It was an accident.'
Lavaca County Sheriff Micah Harmon added: 'He was very remorseful. I don't think it was his intent for the man to die.'

Residents of the small Lavaca County town were largely in support of the father, saying the victim deserved it.
Sonny Jaehne, a Shiner native, told the Victoria Advocate: 'He got what he deserved, big time.
Friend Mark Harabis reiterated this: 'I agree with him totally. I would probably do worse.
'The family will have to deal with that the rest of their lives, no matter what happens to the father. Even if they let him go, he and his child will have to deal with that the rest of their lives.'
