Man jailed five years for selling child for N10m

By Wole Mosadomi
A Niger State magistrate court sitting in Minna, the state capital, has sentenced one Isah Aliyu to five years imprisonment for intending to sell his 9-year-old child for N10m.
The 30-year-old man attributed his action to poverty.
The incident occurred on November 15 when the buyer, one Mallam Magaji, agreed to buy the child for N7 million.
But the buyer promised to pay half of the money and balance at a later date. The father of the child was said to have refused because of his desperation to collect the N7 million at once.
After the negotiation, the father agreed to the half payment but, instead of bringing the money, the buyer headed for the police station to report the deal.

The police then followed Magaji to the meeting place and arrested Aliyu who was still waiting for the money so that he could hand over his son. Aliyu was charged to court under the clause prohibiting selling of child in the Niger State Child’s Right Act.
Aliyu pleaded guilty and was summarily sentenced to five years imprisonment by Chief Magistrate Hassan Mohammed.
When asked why he intended to sell his son, the convict said, “The poverty in the country is biting and things are difficult for me and my family. I felt since the boy was under my custody and he is my son, I could sell him and use the money to cater for the rest of the family.”
The Chief Magistrate described his reason as inhuman, adding that poverty was not a strong reason for the father to sell his son.
He sentenced Aliyu to five years imprisonment without option of fine.

READ What Pastor Adeboye Has To Say To His Critics

pastor-adeboye-e1360270085419-459x300
Despite rave criticisms that greeted the planned construction of a three kilo-meter auditorium at the Redeemed Christian Church of God’s Redemption Camp along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, the General Overseer of the church Sunday disclosed that the said auditorium and several other developments in the church are but a child’s play
Speaking during a special prayer programme organised for RCCG Region 1 for youths and newly ordained ministers in the church at the church headquarters in Ebute Metta Lagos, the former mathematics lecturer said the church is founded on God’s covenant, and therefore its current growth cannot be comprehended by human wisdom.
Giving hint of changes to expect in the church, he said: “A day is coming in my lifetime when the ordination of ministers will be divided into three sessions, morning, afternoon and evening sessions and more than 25,000 persons will be ordained in each of the sessions. You can say the dreamer has come again, but I know my dreams always turn to true”.
Continuing, Daddy G.O. said: “RCCG was not be built on human wisdom or ability. The last time I was at Malaysia we had but a house fellowship; but today there are 45 parishes of the church. One bishop said they should give him five years and he would leave RCCG far behind; I smiled and I said he will soon discover the difference between human wisdom and divine assistance because we have God on our side

Beware! Used underwear can give you syphilis, other STDs

Underwears
She drives slowly, being careful of the many vehicles and the milling crowd in the market. Suddenly, she pulls over her Sports Utility Vehicle, alights, walks into a stall and joins other shoppers selecting second-hand underwear from a heap.
She is lucky to find a parking space because it is scarce on Fridays at Vesper Market, off Lagos-Badagry Expressway in Badagry Local Government Area, Lagos. On the major market day (Friday) finding space to either walk or park vehicles is usually a big challenge.
That is the day shoppers converge on the market to buy from the newest consignments of second-hand clothes from London, United States, Italy and other countries.
Second-hand clothes? Yes, even second-hand underwear!
There, you find buyers who resell the wares in other smaller markets. You will also find direct users – both low and medium income earners. Wholesale transactions are done on Fridays. On offer are all types of used clothes, shoes, bags and underwear for men, women and children.
The woman, who later identified herself as Danny, told Saturday PUNCH that she had a regular customer in the market. She visits the market only when her customer informs her, via the telephone, that there are new consignments.

SEE NIGERIA’S MILLIONAIRE STUDENT FRAUDSTERS

Before he met his waterloo some months ago, 30-year-old Hope Olusegun Aroke lived in the elite 1004 Housing Estate, Victoria Island, Lagos. Aroke, an undergraduate in a Malaysian university, had the world at his beck and call, as he could afford just about anything that meant class. For him, provision was probably just another successful scam away. And the race to maintain the social status that fraud had allegedly earned him could never end. In his garage was a fleet of posh cars and SUVs, all of Mercedes-Benz brand. Though a tenant, he successfully outshone the status of his co-residents. To many, the young man had done well for himself by a dint of hard work. In some sense, Aroke was working hard, but as a suspected serial scammer. His busy neighbours barely noticed his unusual schedule, but many were irked by his exceptional flamboyant lifestyle. Most times, when neighbours were out to work, Aroke stayed indoor in company with other young men, who were later discovered to be his fraud cell suspects.

If USA Attacks Syria, There Will be no Peace For Years – Prophet TB Joshua

Nigerian Prophet, TB Joshua has said that ‘If the world goes to war in Syria, it will not stop there. It will affect all its neighbours. There will be no peace in that region for years.’

He added: “We should appeal to the Arab League to come together and talk to our brother.” God Almighty continues to speak through His servants, the prophets. Prophet T.B. Joshua gave words of prophecy concerning the pending war on Syria. The Bible says in Proverbs 29:18, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” We thank God for the prophetic warning and the instruction in righteousness and wisdom to handle such a situation. We pray that those involved will hear the voice of God and heed the warning. Listen as he tells the world what God has said about the situation.

Landlords With Houses Beside TB Joshua’s Church in Lagos, Convert Homes to Hotels

Many residential buildings in Ikotun-Egbe on the outskirts of Lagos have been converted to hotels and inns because of the presence of TB Joshua’s Synagogue of all Nations Church.

The Egbe-Ikotun area of Lagos, the once residential area, is of late beginning to attract a lot of attention and increasingly becoming a business hub, courtesy of the presence of Synagogue Church of All Nations.
Following the large number of people coming to worship or seek one religious favour or another in the church, the tempo and standard of life in the area have moved upward.

PUNCHNG reports that many house owners prefer to relocate to other parts of the city and let out their houses as chalets.
One of them, Mr. Gabriel Omatade, who relocated to Gemade Estate in Egbeda, said he had two houses now turned to hotels in the area.
He said he makes more than double the money he could have made if his house had been solely occupied by tenants.

Marijuana, safer than painkillers — STUDY

By Sola Ogundipe

BELIEVE it or not, but you could be safer ingesting marijuana -the most used illegal drug on Earth – than a prescription pain killer drug. Findings by a brand new first-of-its-kind global study conducted at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, USA, showed that prescription pain killers, though legal, could be the deadliest drug of all.

A publication in The Lancet, revealed that marijuana, though often preferred to other illicit drugs of addiction such as cocaine, heroin and amphetamines are responsible for killing fewer persons than addictive painkillers such as Oxycontin and Vicodinbe.

Of a total of 78,000 drug deaths, prescription pain pills accounted for more than half. The study does not mention why marijuana has become the most popular drug, controversy over the legalisation of cannabis in some US states rages on.

While marijuana use is still illegal according to federal law, the new global report found that men in their 20s were most likely to abuse any of the drugs studied. Drugs such as Ecstasy and other hallucinogens were not included due to a lack of data.

The study also found that Australia, Russia, the UK and the US were the hardest hit by substance abuse. Those living in these areas were also more likely to use the drugs which originated closer to home.

For instance, persons living in Asia or Australia were more inclined to abuse amphetamines and opioids whereas North Americans used more marijuana and cocaine.
